I wonder what the evolutionary effect is of this propensity we seem to have of electing people to public office based upon just about anything except their fitness for the duties and responsibilities of that office.

Lives in the Balance
Decades ago, singer / songwriter Jackson Browne assembled and performed an album and benefit concert tour known as Lives in the Balance consisting mostly of songs with a strongly anti-war message. During the George W. Bush administration the title track from this album (click to hear a sample; complete lyrics) had had an eerily familiar ring to it. Despite its age, this echo of past protest seems at least as apt today as in the times that gave rise to it.
